With the advancement of globalization, international exchange, especially culturalexchange has becoming more and more important in the multilateral relations. As animportant carrier of cultural exchange, travel journal plays a significant role in culturalexchange. The translation of travel journals could promote culture development of ourcountry; it could also promote the mutual communication and integration of the culturaldiversity around the world and put forward the two-way communication between differentcultural backgrounds.This thesis aims to report the English to Chinese translation of the travel journal Tastethe “Big Apple”—Random Talks on the US. It mainly consists of five parts: task description,translation process description, general character and translation theory of travel journal, casesanalysis and translation practice summary. The main characters of this travel journal Taste the“Big Apple” mainly include: plenty of colloquialism, a large amount of Chinese proverbs, ahuge utilization of the Chinese phrases of four characters, and numerous scene descriptionand compound short sentences, and the poems created by the author. All of the above are theimportant and difficult points in translation. In the translation process, various translationtheories are applied to solve these difficult points: use transformation theory to translate theChinese phrases of four characters, use foreignization theory to translate Chinese proverbs,transfer the implicit into the explicit through the compound short sentences translation, anduse spirit-oriented transference of meaning in translating poems. After the analysis of thetranslation process, a summary was made to describe the reflection and guiding function ofthis translation process. It also pointed out the unsolved problems and improving parts amongthe translation process.
