With the further promotion of Chinese around the world, the number of Chinese textbooks is growing sharply, especially in Japan, where there are a lot of excellent Chinese textbooks. The author taught Chinese in Ritsmeikan Asia Pacific University (APU for short) last year. There were a large number of students learning Chinese in APU but the textbooks used changed every semester because none was suitable for them then. And in some other universities, this situation occurs as well. Thus, composing suitable nationalized Chinese textbooks is necessary and significant. This research is a comparative study of two Chinese textbooks based on the principles of textbook writing. The questionnaire survey the Chinese learners in APU reveals some characteristics of Chinese learners themselves and their feelings about "New Practical Chinese Textbook" and "Step Up Chinese", which are used as the Chinese textbooks in APU."New Practical Chinese Textbook" stands out because of its practical value yielded by the topics, but it’s really difficult for learners who live in Japan."Step up Chinese" is closely related to the daily life, however, the topics are somewhat superficial to the leaners. These two textbooks are all popular but they are far from being perfect.Textbooks for non-Chinese majors will be more and more important because of the promotion of Chinese. We should study the differences among different kinds of learners in order to compose textbooks that will meet the different needs of different groups of learners and compile nationalized textbooks for them.
