A Study Of The Transfer From The Static To The Dynamic State In English-Chinese Translation As Exemplified By Liu Zhongde’s Version Of Emma

It is a common phenomenon to make the transfer from the static to the dynamic state in English-Chinese translation, but scholars do not share the same opinion as to its categorization and the conditions for using this method. These are the two issues the thesis attempts to solve by borrowing relevant theories in translation studies and linguistics and taking Liu Zhongde’s Chinese version of Emma as an example.The thesis explains the necessity for the transfer from the static to the dynamic state in English-Chinese translation from the perspectives of the principle of equivalent translation as well as differences in parts of speech of words and in thinking modes between English and Chinese; it attempts to illustrate the types of the transfer through a summary of the views maintained by translation theorists, and puts forward the general condition for using the method by citing the relevant ideas of some representatives in the fields of translation studies and linguistics.An analysis of Liu Zhongde’s Chinese version of Emma shows that the transfer from the static state to the dynamic state mainly falls into two types. One is that English words of verb form are translated into Chinese verbs, that is, changing English verbs of feeble phenomenality and empty verbs into Chinese verbs. The other is that English words of non-verb form are translated into Chinese verbs, that is, transferring into Chinese verbs the non-verb forms of English nouns, adjectives, adverbs and prepositional phrases, among which English nouns are transferred into Chinese verbs most frequently. It also shows that an English word can be converted into a Chinese verb if only it denotes action or contains a dynamic concept.
