Wuchen Tan’s Beihuaj ing, translated in Sixteen Kingdoms Dynasty.There is a lot of oral language and much value in the researches of the vocabulary history. We count Beihuajing’s words,discuss the way of its production of new words and analysis the structure and form of the disvllables.The dissertation comprises five chapters:In the first chapter we elaborate the original idea of this topic,discuss some relative questions in this thesis and review briefly the study on the Middle-ancient lexicon of Chinese transition of Buddhist sutras in recent two decades. The research of words of Medieval Buddhist have wide level, diachronic, synchronic, commonly used words and theoretical research have been strengthened; the methods of research are rich and colorful, lexical comparison, version, different translations of the same Buddhist, doubt apocryphal, all had made a lot of achievements.In the second chapter we have a brief introduction on Wuchen Tan and Beihuajing. Wuchen Tan is a famous translator of his time.Between421-433, Beihuajing was translated into Chinese.The book consists of ten volumes,about105000words.It become the most precious materials of study on the words of Buddhist sutra in Middle Chinese because of it’s concise lauguage,vivid rhymes and it contains many stories. In the third chapter we discuss the general picture of the lexicon system of Beihuajing.Beihuajing contains4,070words, in which there are2,190single-syllbale words,1,760two-syllbale words,120much-syllablewords, and it rich is in Polysyllabic word. It contains418Buddhistwords,3,818words coming from Pre-Qin, western and Eastern HanDynasties and252new words.Through statistical analysis, it’s quite obvious that there is a large difference between Sanskrit and Chinese in the written form. And it has a huge impact on Chinese language during the Sanskrit and Chinese language contact.In the forth chapter we describe thoroughly the new words and new senses of some old words of Beihuajing. We concentrate on the study of the structure and form of the new words and the source of the new senses of the old words. We analysis93new words and21new senses that were not included in the Unabridged Chinese Dictionary, and at the same time, we analysis73new words and63new senses which can supply new book proofs for the Unabridged Chinese Dictionary.In the fifth chapter we analysis the structure and form of the disyllables in six parts, and we concentrate on the coordinating compounds and supplementary disyllables. We can see that coordinate compounds, subjuct-predicate compounds in this duration develop quiekly, compounds consisting of a modifier and the word it modifies, veb-complement compounds relatively develop slowly. In a word,we think the study on the words of Buddhist sutra in Middle Chinese can overcome the shortcomings of the Chinese Literature. At the same time,it provide a lot of language materials for the study of Chinese in Middle Chinese.It also provide a lot of new words and new senses that were not included in the Unabridged Chinese Dictionary.
