Manipulation In New Immigrant Literature Translation From The Perspective Of Rewriting Theory

With the increasingly frequent cross-cultural communication worldwide,numerous authors and their works are sparkling in the field of literature, like YanGeling’s The Lost Daughter of Happiness, Hong Ying’s K, and Gao Xingjian’s SoulMountain. Their claim to fame is that they themselves are fine works and theirtranslated versions are narrated ingeniously with exquisite description. But to translatethose works properly is nothing easy. Because translators not only need to take all therelated factors into consideration, but also try to retain those works’ original features,like multicultural communication, enlightenment, diversity in style, etc. Themanipulation of exotic culture to the New Immigrant Literature Translation can bebest explained by Rewriting Theory from the three factors, namely, ideology, poeticsand patronage. Therefore, Rewriting Theory can be a best way to study the translationof the New Immigrant Literature.For the object of study, the author of the thesis selected the most influential newimmigrant novel The Lost Daughter of Happiness, which is written by the famousChinese-American woman writer Yan Geling. Then the author analyzed the threemanipulation factors in the English version of The Lost Daughter of Happiness, suchas the translation of the names in the novel, the rewrite of “three inch lotus feet” andthe representation of the writer’s feelings. Furthermore, some translation methods thatcan help retain the original features on one hand and meet the need of the targetculture on the other hand were concluded. Through the research, some results of the thesis can be obtained. First of all, it proved Rewriting Theory is a fresh perspectivein the study of the translation of New Immigrant Literature. Next, the analysis of themanipulation in The Lost Daughter of Happiness was presented. Besides, some propertranslation methods for new immigrant novels were provided. Finally, the author ofthe thesis also hopes that the thesis can help to further the study of the New ImmigrantLiterature and contribute to multicultural communication.
