The development of translation practice has always closely followed the changes of society. With the rapid development of science and technology and great introduction of scientific and technological information from abroad, translation of EST (English for Science and Technology) has become a more and more important translation activity. There are certain translation strategies and methods according to the language characteristics and text function when translating EST. This report focuses on how the author dealt with translation difficulties on word, sentence and paragraph levels of source text under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s communicative translation method, thus achieving the task goal and meeting the requirements of the client.Based on the translation materials of two English scientific and technological articles about the phytotherapy research of Angelica sinensis extractive SBD.4A and detailed translation case studies, this report focuses on how the author dealt with translation difficulties on vocabulary, sentence and paragraph levels of source texts under the guidance of communicative translation method after well analyzing the language characteristics and purpose of translation, thus achieving the task goal and meeting the requirements of the client. In this report, the author firstly proposes the basic object of this translation task and the main translation principle after analyzing the language characteristics of source text and the identity positioning of target reader. Then, the author chooses communicative translation method dealing with those translation difficulties on word, sentence and paragraph levels and making the target language smooth and easy enough for the reader to understand. In the end, the author makes the conclusion and self-examination for the whole translation process.At last, the author draws a conclusion: Whenever receiving a translation task, the translator should make well analysis and find out the purpose of translation through communicating with the client before starting translation, then chooses the proper translation method.It is hoped that this report offers some useful experience on the source text analysis before translation and the application of communicative translation method for translators.
