Wang Mian And His Friends

Wang Mian’s research is an important topic in the study of Wang Mian. Wang Mian is a representative person of the painters and calligraphers. This paper based on studying Wang Mian’s life, during his travel period, some affairs happened. We try to clarify its positive effect on his painting works.There are two reasons to select this topic. First, the former research on Wang Mian is about his life, poetry, painting, calligraphy and so on, has not yet been systematically analyzed. The study contributes to the understanding of Wang Mian’s art value and his view of life. It can broaden the research content. Second, Wang Mian has outstanding artistic achievements. His poetry, books, paintings, cavings are on a comprehensive high level. He is a representative of the painters and calligraphers. There are still some insufficiencies. We need take further research on this field.According to the works which are related with Wang Mian. Wang Guowei said we can prove history through the poem. We take all his friends as a system to research. We do some research works on the aim of his social communication. We also research on the positive effects about his social communication. There are several innovation points in the paper.First, Wang Mian’s life can be divided into four stages:childhood, education, official and the period of seclusion. We discuss the experiences and characteristics of each period. In early childhood, Wang Mian was very talented. He studied hard. Many friends praised him. In his education period, Wang Mian learned from Han Xing. He had traveled far away from his home, and had been guided by Zhao Mengfu personally. In official period, Wang Mian traveled across many mountains and rivers. He made many friends and increased his knowledge. In the period of seclusion, though he was very poor, but still insisted on artistic creation, such as poetry, calligraphy, painting and caving. Most of Wang Mian’s famous paintings were created in this period.Second, we study Wang Mian’s birthday and death. We also researched the question whether he joined the army. We concluded that Wang Mian’s birthday isn’t sure, he died in1359. Wang Mian had joined the army and he had actively made plans to attack Shao Xing.Third, the paper analyzed the motivation of Wang Mian’s social communication. There are two reasons. First, Wang Mian is talented. He hoped to achieve political ambitions when he was young. However, it is very difficult to achieve his aim. When his examination was failed, he burned all the books. After that he took another way to achieve his own political ideals by painting and poems. Second, Wang Mian likes traveling very much. It increased his knowledge, broaden his horizons. Wang Mian had five tourisms. He wrote many poems during his traveling.Fourth, we take all his friends as a system to research. Wang Mian’s friends reached more than80. They can be roughly divided into two categories: First, the literati class representatives such as Zhao Meng, Han Xing, Wang Gen, Shen Tujiong, Li Xiaoguang, Liu Ji, Ye Jingchang, Ke Jiusi, Gong Xingzhi, Ding Fu, Shao Hengzhen, Zheng Yuanyou, Song Xi, Yang Weizhen, Zhang Xian, Yu Kan and so on. Second, the religious people, such as Pu Ming, Lai Fu, Pu Qia and so on. The way of making friends is mainly by singing poetry, traveling and exploring the arts.Fifth, making friends reflected Wang Mian’s noble character, poetry, calligraphy, painting, carving and other aspects. Traveling is an important source of his literary creation. It established to promote his rustic poetry. He also learned many art techniques and concepts during his social communication. He created a dense forms of painting flowers. There were many carving masters, who inspired him very much. Wang Mian has a great position in Chinese carving history. In short, Wang Mian’s poetry, calligraphy, painting, and carving still effect our life.
