Plums are always loved by people for their noble characters. Until Song Dynasty,Emperor Huizong was fond of plums, thus, a social trend was established to work. The vogue played its role in planting prune trees and appreciating plums which became an important theme for poetry and painting at that time. Until Yuan Dynasty, plums were gradually proved to be a significant theme performed in ink and washing. Wangmian is known for painting ink plum blossom. Wangmian not only inherited but also innovated in the style of Huaguang and Yang Wujiu. He created the style “thick flowers type”Through this creation, he perfectly combined schematism, technique of expression with poetry, calligraphy and painting. Thus, he reached new heights and set a great example.The thesis explores the cause of Wanmian’s painting style by means of restoring his living condition. And through the comparative study to explore the influences he had made to the development of genre of ink plum blossom painting and later generations as well.
