In this paper, the TV documentary " A Bite of China" is analyzed, combing with the existing study of Chinese images’semantic rhetoric. Looking at things from audio-visual language rhetoric, the paper will introduce its context, elements, medium and expansion presented in this TV documentary by text analysis and illustration.Firstly, based on the film, the paper will introduce the media environment of which " A Bite of China" is filmed and the cultural context of the intrinsic semantic rhetoric. Then, from the angle of the contact between metaphoric and semantic rhetoric, there will be a detailed analysis of metaphoric the film used. Secondly, the paper will focus on the five audio-visual language rhetorical elements used in this film-rich documentary video, mellow music, unspoken commentary, detailed null lens, accurate macro shooting, which present a strong visual feast. What’s more, combined with the film’s visual language, its medium is shown from the following aspects:the sound and picture all-in-one, sound and picture confrontation, sound and picture rival, sound and picture phase contrast, sound and picture separation. Then, the paper will study the film’s artistic effects which comes from the research of its intrinsic audio-visual language elements and external structures. Finally, the paper will illustrate the the necessity of researching in audio-visual language rhetoric. As one of the most important documentary ideographic means, language rhetoric can not only provide the audiences a strong feeling of sharing audio-visual display, but also extend the meaning of the documentary.Usually, the rhetoric of television is strange to the audience. But if we regard the documentary as a language, then the use of the rhetoric in documentary makes sense, which constitutes the special speech mode of the documentary. TV documentary " A Bite of China" becomes popular from2012. It not only made the history with China Industrial Creation Mode documentary, but produced the " tongue " series derivative cultural effects, providing experience for the future creation of documentary.
