China’s business relations and activities with western countries have been intensivelystrengthened in the21stCentury, especially with those countries using English as their nativelanguage. With English being the international language used in global business activities,C-E business translation serves as an important bridge connecting business trade betweenChina and other countries, which has recently drawn increasing scholars’ attention. Althoughsome achievements have been made, business text translation is still a new research area andneeds to be guided by appropriate theories. Only in this way can satisfactory translation workbe made.Business English translation belongs to applied translation, which has been a heatedresearch topic in recent years. Many researchers study business text translation from differentperspectives like text type or functional equivalence theory, and have proposed manyconstructive translation strategies and principles. This thesis focuses on German functionalistskopostheorie and sets forth some original understandings of business text translation.According to skopostheorie, translation purpose determines its choice of translation strategies.The translator should base the choice of translation strategy on the expected function of thetarget text. The thesis starts from this perspective to explore the plausibility of skopostheorieto business text translation. Since business text focuses on its practical functions, thusskopostheorie not only is applicable to the study of business text translation, but also willguide the choice of corresponding strategy.Besides introduction and conclusion, the thesis is divided into four chapters. Inintroduction, it mainly explains the major reasons and significance of research in this field.Chapter one is literature review, mainly introducing detailedly the definition and textclassification of business English, and the research history in China and Western as well.Chapter two is theoretical framework, mainly elaborating on the emergence and developmentof skopostheorie, and also some basic relevant principles. Chapter three serves as aconnecting link between the preceding and the following chapter, which focuses on theresearch of text features of business English at different levels, and its correspondingtranslation principles. Being the most important part of the thesis, chapter four mainly studies the guiding role of skopostheorie to business text translation, and then explores its suitabletranslation strategies. In conclusion, the author summarizes major findings of the thesis,points out the limitations of the study and proposes some suggestions for further study.
