Sperber and Wilson put forward the relevance-theory for the first time in1986.From the perspective of the Relevance-theory, language communication is the processof schematic-cognitive. It plays the dominant role in the expression andunderstanding of meaning. From their opinion, the process of languagecommunication is to seek verbal communication associated processes.This article is conducted from the perspective of relevance-theory, using themethod of case study and comparative study, and choosing two Chinese versions ofPride and Prejudice as research objective in order to analyze the verbal irony ofPride and Prejudice, to explore the translation strategy from the perspective of verbalirony, in order to demonstrate the profound Chinese language and culture to theworld.In this thesis, chapter one introduces the background, significance, researchobjectives, research methods, and innovation. in chapter two, it summarizes the studyof literary translation of several scholars from the perspective of relevance-theory,with verbal irony analysis. Chapter three, based on the application of relevance-theory,this thesis analyze two Chinese version of Pride and Prejudice in the aspects oftranslator’s adaptation. It includes the translator’s adaptation to the analysis ofcharacters, translator’s adaptation to the context, social adaptation and the translator’sadaptation to the author and the readers. The fourth chapter is about contextualactivation of verbal irony in Pride and Prejudice. The fifth chapter is the conclusionthat summarizes the research results, limitations and future research directions. |
