Speech act theory becomes one of the most important theories in pragmatics. The irony as a key means of writing, also has very close connection with speech act theory. On the basis of inheriting Austin’s theory of speech act and developing Searle’s theory of speech act, the corresponding points mainly manifests in two aspects, namely macroscopic speech acts and microscopic ironic speech acts. Jane Austen is famous for its excellent irony art, domestic and foreign scholars have ever studied irony in Pride and Prejudice from different aspects, but few of them treats speech act theory as the research point. Therefore, with the help of the relationship between the irony and speech act theory including macroscopic ironic speech acts and micro ironic speech two aspects, this thesis explores the irony in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice by means of detailed data statistics and analysis through the characters’ actions and dialogues in the novel, in order to taste unique charm of irony in the novel and Jane Austen’s extraordinary irony art.
