Fluency in consecutive interpretation has been an important standard for evaluatingthe overall quality of interpretation performance. For Chinese interpreters, Chinese toEnglish interpretation is interpreting from A language to B language, which is contrary tothe practice of other language combinations that often adopt B to A interpretation in theinternational stage. This paper, however, discusses the factors and reasons behinddisfluency in Chinese to English interpretation for Chinese interpreters, namely in A to Binterpretation. In this paper, the author will first summarize the research results andfindings in previous researches about the evaluation of English to Chinese and Chinese toEnglish consecutive interpretation respectively. Then, based on the definitions andexplanations about disfluency, the author will compare disfluency with pauses which arefrequently discussed in the field of interpretation evaluation and thus hope to give a clearidea of how disfluency is defined in this paper. Next, as the scope of research is described, the author will give a detailed analysis of disfluency in the interpretation work she did inthe “2013Shanghai Forum” by listening to the recorded audio and comparing the twotranscripts, i.e. of the Chinese original one and the English interpretation. Then in thefollowing part, the author will try to find out the reasons behind disfluency in this caseand give a detailed analysis by dividing them into three categories. In the last chapter, based on the results, the author will propose feasible suggestions for improving fluencyin A to B interpretations for interpreters whose working language is Chinese.
