This thesis probes into the modern Chinese "HAO"(好),especially the syntactical distribution, semantic representations, comparing with modal adverbs "ZHI HAO"(只好)、"ZUI HAO"(最好)、"XING HAO/HAO ZAP(幸好/好在),and the modality connections of the different "HAO"(好)’s, so as to improve the comprehension of modality of "HAO"(好).The thesis includes9chapters with about60,000characters in total. In chapter one, the introduction consists in the objects the significance of the research, the range of argument, the approach of analyzing and the resource of the corpora’s source. The second chapter argues about the theoretical problems of modality, including the concept of modality, the types of modality and the modality category of modern Chinese "HAO"(好)In third chapter, we define the modality semantic distributions of "HAO"($?), as well as their syntactical and semantic connections. The fourth chapter explores the grammatical characteristics and modality semantics of the modal verb "HAO’’(好1)Comparing with adjectives "HAO"(), we prove that "HAO"(好1)is the untypical in the modal verb category. The fifth chapter analyses the grammatical characteristics and modality semantics of the modal verb "HAO"(好1)and "HAO"(好2)."HAO"(好2)is at the modal stage. Its modality semantics is deontic modality [permission] and [necessity]."HAO"(好3)’s modality semantics is dynamic modality [capacity].In the last three chapters, we probe into the grammatical characteristics and modality semantics of the modal adverbs "ZHI HAO"(只好)、‘’ZUI HAO"(最好)、"XING HAO/HAO ZAI"(幸好/好在), respectively."ZHI HAO"(只好)’smodality semantics is deontic modality [necessity]."ZUI HAO"(最好)’s modality semantics is deontic modality [necessity] and dynamic modality [willingness]. "XING HAO/HAO ZAI"(幸好/好在)’s modality semantics is "fortunate".Chapter9is conclusion, summarizes the main ideas of the thesis.
