Cultural communication between China and western countries in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties plays an important role in the development of Chinese culture. This period has been a hot topic in ideological and cultural fields. After analyzing the previous research results by references analysis, historical investigation and comparative study, the thesis found that the previous researches valued historical data collection and specific historical figures. Based on this, from the exchange of scientific and technological thoughts, the paper highlights the era backgrounds, manifestations and influences of the period, and then summarizes the effective historical experiences.The paper firstly presents current research at home and abroad about the topic. After affirming achievements and pointing out shortages of the current research, the paper indicates research ideas, methods, values and possible innovation points. Then the thesis summarizes the era backgrounds. The development of social productive forces, the rise of Pragmatism and demand for feudal rule are the domestic backgrounds. The demand for capitalism development, the rise of the Enlightenment, and the improvement of science and technology are the international backgrounds. Both show the particularity of the phenomena during the period. After that the thesis discusses the forms of the activities of the cultural exchange. Science and technology as its intermediary, synthesization as its method, western missionaries and liberal intellectuals as its carrier show the uniqueness of the phenomena.The paper focuses on the influences on China and western countries, especially impacts on Chinese social values, such as science consciousness, competitive consciousness, free consciousness, educational concept, and western social values, and restriction on Chinese cognitive level of science and technology, in order to analyze this event objectively.The paper summarizes the historical experiences at last. Based on Contact and Development-the two social objective requests, through maintaining own value system, absorbing new values and promoting discourse space to gradually achieve goals of cultural exchange between China and the west.
