A Study Of Figure Interpreting In Consecutive Interpreting From The Perspective Of Effort Model

During the process of consecutive interpreting, figure interpreting becomes the bottleneck which affects the quality of interpreting, and it will therefore influence on-site communication. However, figure interpreting, as an important area of study, has not received enough attention till now.Gile set up two models respectively for simultaneous interpreting and consecutive interpreting in reference to their characteristics. To make further research on interpreting, he put forward Effort Models inequality. In the inequality, the process under the Effort Models is exposed in a clear way, which makes great contribution to the research on consecutive interpreting.Based on the Effort Model put forward by Gile, this paper analyzes the underlying reasons and the phenomenon of the breaking of effort coordination in figure interpreting and suggests some strategies in relieving the interpreters’ stress to achieve coordinated effort.The following conclusions are drawn from the practical study in this dissertation: The reasons of the breaking of effort coordination in figure interpreting are mainly because numbers are of low predictability, relativity and redundancy with a high informative content, and the differences of numeral systems between the English and Chinese languages. The facts mentioned above will cause the mistakes of figure interpreting of wrong interpretation, deliberate omission and approximation. Therefore, by adopting effort model as the guiding theory as well as the inequality, interpreters should pay more attention to the numerical information in listening, analysis and memory task, while in note-taking task, interpreters should reduce the energy distribution so that he can coordinate three tasks of the first phase of consecutive interpreting to complete effectively. At last, in production phase, interpreters should master the skills of translation in order to interpreting more quickly and accurately.
