A Practice Report On Chinese Translation Of No Higher Honor:a Memoir Of My Years In Washington

Memoir is a type of narrative text genre. It is the author who writes the text based on his/her own past experiences, social activities and other meaningful events. The memoir is always being called " video for the old days" because it tells the truth and real history. It is worthwhile to be considered as a part of authorized history document. Condoleezza Rice’s latest long memoir No Higher Honor: A Memoir of My Years in Washington has been published for readers all over the world. The book is just written by her own experiences of Secretary of State position in Washington.And it is obviously referential to the history of the U.S.A.The author has chosen the second chapter-Honest Broker and the third chapter-Policy Begins as the practical translation program. In Honest Broker, Rice talked about the interesting relationship with Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney and also her important position in the National Security Council. In Policy Begins, she put her eyes on foreign policy such as Mexico and Iraq. By reviewing and analyzing the translation process as well as representative cases, the report explores two aspects in such a memoir genre:how to express the original information exactly so as to achieve readability and precision and how to put the translation theory into translation practice.As the report presents, in order to know language characteristic of this great woman, the author firstly searched as much the background information about Condoleezza Rice as possible; Secondly, the author introduced the functional equivalence theory which was put forward by Eugene A.Nida. Then, next part the author paid attention to the translation of the pronouns,polysemy and adverbs by some examples. Also, there were translation skills for long sentences by using skills of embedding, cutting and reframing. Lastly, the author took some examples in order to prove the importance of logical thinking for the whole passage.It is hoped that this report offers some referential value for the memoir genre translation of morphology, syntax and coherence.
