This paper is a report based on the C-E translation practice of the project "Implementation Plan of2013XXX Arxan Activity" for Beijing Social Zone Advertising Media Co., Ltd., which intends to reserch the translation of tourism text from Chinese into English from the perspective of Newmark’s translation theory. Based on the translation practice, the report briefly analyzes the discourse features of Chinese tourism text, and deals with the English translation methods and characteristics of Chinese tourism text by analyzing some living examples. Tourism, as a typical cross-cultural communicative activity, is booming these years. With reform and opening-up of China nowadays, and the successful Beijing Olympic Games in2008and the Shanghai International Expo in2010, the translation of tourism text is also developing rapidly and becomes more and more important. As a public material for foreigners, its quality will produce a direct impact on the public."How to make the tourism text adequate and proper both in form and meaning" is a valuable question. Peter Newmark’s translation theory is of certain significance to this translation practice. The translation theory of Newmark’s gives the author some inspiration in this respcet. Accoding to Newmark’s translation theory, there are three text-categories:expressive text, informative text and vocative text. He also comes out two methods of translation:semantic and communicative to settle different problems in different texts. Semantic translation attempts to render, as closely as the semantic and syntactic structures of the TL allow, the exact contextual meaning of the original. On the other hand, communicative translation attempts to produce on its readers an effect as close as possible to that obtained on the readers of the source language. Semantic translation is precise, but may not communicate well; whereas communicative translation communicates well, but may not be very accurate. In Newmark’s opinion, it’s better to combined these two methods during translation. Besides the introduction, this report contains four parts:firstly, the author gives an brief about this translation project, a tourism text, which was provide by Beijing Social Zone Advertising Media Co., Ltd.; secondly, it describes the characterstics of this Chinese tourism text, and analyzes that how the theory should apply to the practice; thirdly, it displays the characteristics of Chinese tuorism text and the problems that the author occured during the translation; and finally, the author draws the conclution that Newmark’s theory is not only a good method for translator, but also a standard for the translator to examine the translation version of the text. In the end, the author think that if the translators can flexibly apply Newmark’s translation theory and methods to guide the C-E tourism text translation, the quality of the translation of tourism text will be proved. As well, a good tourism text can well spread Chinese culture and promote the development of China and international communication better.
