A Report On The Translation Of Food Fix(Excerpt) From The Communicative Translation Perspective

This report is based on section-4 and section-15 of Food Fix by Mark Hyman.This book outlines Dr.Hyman’s thoughts about food.He believes that solving the food problem is crucial to the population,environment,climate,economy,and well-being of humans.In order to adjust the dysfunctional food system,Dr.Hyman gives some suggestions from the aspects of individuals,governments and enterprises.Communicative translation is one of the two translation theories proposed by Peter Newmark.It focuses on the transmission of information according to the language,culture and pragmatics of the target language,rather than the faithful reproduction of the source text.Newmark also puts forward the applicability of communicative translation in informative texts and vocative texts.According to Peter Newmark’s text classification standard,Food Fix is a compound text with informative function and vocative function.Accordingly,in the process of translation,communicative translation theory is used to convey the original information and express the original author’s suggestions.The translator discusses the translation methods from the perspectives of lexical and syntactic level.At the lexical level,amplification,omission and four-character phrases are mainly adopted,while at the syntactic level,adaptation and cutting are mainly applied.The translator analyzes the cases in order to make the translation fluent,accurate and readable.The translator believes that Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory has a guiding significance to the translation practice of compound texts with informative function and vocative function,and has certain reference value for the translation of food and health books.
