Cun technique, a skill used in Chinese landscape painting to depict the texture and structure of mounts&stones, is an artistic representation extracted and perfected by generations of artists through their artistic practice of "learning from nature and expressing one’s mind". Cun technique is the representation of both natural mounts&stones and the artists’own painting features, and different cun techniques exhibit inevitably different geologic-physiognomic structure features. Developing synchronously with Chinese landscape painting, various cun techniques have extraordinary artistic meaning and cultural value. This paper searches for the link of geologic-physiognomic structure features and cun techniques in landscape painting, tracing back to the scientific theoretical foundation and original materials of cun techniques for reasons of its formation, development and perfection. This paper focuses on the relationship of the geologic-physiognomic structure features in Sichuan and the cun techniques in landscape painting, proving the positive connection between the two parties through argumentation, thus providing theoretical direction to my own artistic practice in view of the geologic-physiognomic structure features in Sichuan and promoting the artistic creation of landscape painting.
