This paper choose the strategies and techniques in culture teachingof Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (hereafter referred to as TCSL) to bethe research topic mainly out of the thinking on the phenomenon of communicationfailures caused by verbal communication breakdown resulting from the differentcultural background between overseas students and the Chinese people.Language and culture are closely interrelated since language is the carrier ofculture and culture affects and restricts language communication. The inadequacy ofculture teaching can directly affect the language teaching effects. As thedevelopment of overall national strength, China plays an indispensable role ininternational society and there emerges a Chinese fever in the world. Limited byclass hour and influenced by traditional theories on second language teaching,TCSL teachers always focus on language structure and language points but ignoreChinese culture or other culture related to Chinese language knowledge in mostcases, which has a direct impact on cross-cultural communicative ability of overseasstudents. We all know that different communication principles are influenced andrestricted by different cultural phenomenon in our social life. To gain a completemastery of these communication principles and to apply them in daily life, overseasstudents must understand the cultural background and cultural phenomenon of thetarget-language country. To do well in Chinese culture teaching, TCSL teachersmust make a change and breakthrough on the strategies and techniques in cultureteaching.Complying with the trend of culture integration, based on cross-culturalcommunication theories and language acquisition theories, referred to the existingexperiences and achievements of Chinese culture teaching, adopted research methodof literature, questionnaire and video analysis, this paper intents to generalize andanalyze related theories and cases of culture teaching, to think about problemsreflected by questionnaires, to present10strategies and techniques in cultureteaching of TCSL and several notable problems in the teaching-learning process with the hope of making some contribution to enriching teaching methods andimproving teaching effects of Chinese culture teaching.
