Polysyllabic Words Study On Buddhist Scripture Translated By ZhiLouJiaChen

Donghan dynasty is an important period when polysyllabic words of Chinese emerged. ZhiLouJiaChen was a famous translator then, whose translation represent the early buddhist scripture, clearly reflecting a tendency of Chinese disyllabification. Systematic study on polysyllabic words of buddhist scripture translated by ZhiLouJiaChen contributes us to know the characteristics of words in early buddhist scripture and the overall features of chinese words during that decades.This essay is divided into5chapters. The first chapter explains the significance of this topic, generality of buddhist scripture translated by ZhiLouJiaChen, allied studies so far, study methods, definition and assortment of polysyllabic words and so on. The second chapter analyzes the syllable and construction of polysyllabic words in buddhist scripture translated by ZhiLouJiaChen, especially focusing on two-syllable word. The third chapter classifies the polysyllabic words into nativewords or loanwords, putting emphasis on producing decade of nativewords by comparing them with documents before and during Donghan dynasty. The fourth chapter talks about preference of choosing polysyllabic words in buddhist scripture translated by ZhiLouJiaChen, exemplifying2different types of semantic fields. The fifth chapter analyzes variousness of the words mentioned above afterwards and its possible mechanism.These words have following characteristics based on the study: involving joint or modifier-head structure two-syllable words mainly, containing many new words, including a large number of transliterations, plain as well as gorgeous, some being uesd widely for generations.
