In modern society, with the rapid development of information network andcommunication technology, mass media is playing an increasingly important role inpeople‘s lives. As an important means of communication and a particular type of mediadiscourse, news report act as the source of information, of entertainment. It enriches thecultural lives of people and subtly effects and changes people‘s cognition, behavior andvalues.Critical discourse analysis (CDA for short) is a newly developed branch of discourseanalysis which aims to work out the connections between language, power and ideology.The purpose of critical discourse analysis is to study the language in use from themulti-dimension such as linguistics, sociology and psychology.Critical discourse analysis is a major branch of linguistic which is developed bylinguists Roger Fowler and Gunther Kress etc. M.A.K. Halliday‘s systemic-functionallinguistics is the main foundation of it. It is trying to unveil the ideology and powerrelationship concealed in discourses and to figure out the role of news discourses on theformation and controlling of people‘s ideology.This thesis is based on Fairclough‘s three-dimensional model and Halliday‘s systemicfunctional grammar (SFG) which provided the main analytical tools for this thesis. Withinthe framework of CDA,30news reports concerning Diaoyu Islands dispute are selectedfrom China Daily and New York Times and Los Angeles Times. A critical analysis will becarrying out to find out the major differences in the news discourse; at same time toidentify ideologies embedded.According to Fairclough‘model of critical discourse analysis. There are three levels:textual level, the discursive level and the social practice level. Based on this model, theselected news reports will be analyzed. Lexical classification, transitivity, modality and discourse representation which mainly provided by Halliday‘s systematic grammar areused as analytical tools in this thesis in hoping to identify and uncover the ideologiesembedded in the news reports.Both practical and pedagogical implication are been found from the research whichreveal that it is necessary to raise the critical language awareness of ordinary people whenthey are reading news reports, in order to they will be able to read critically, have acomprehensive understanding of the news events, and realize the ideologies hidden behind.The findings also offer an advice that in language teaching, the study of the social andcultural contexts should be included. Meanwhile, critical reading skills of the Englishlearners should be trained and improved in order to make sure that they can be becomefamiliar with some naturalized linguistic strategies used in news reports, because thosestrategies will reflect the ideologies embedded.
