Language is not only the tool for communication, but also the reflection of social ideology. Critical discourse analysis(CDA)studies the symbiotic relationship of language, power and ideology. Besides, CDA intends to reveal the ideology concealed in discourse and explains the formation as well as social conditions of the ideology. However, with the deepening of study, the current CDA has been widely criticized for lacking the cognitive factors during the analysis. Therefore, in resent years, more and more theories of cognitive linguistics such as metaphor, metonymy, and categorization have been gradually adopted in CDA. However, as an important part of cognitive linguistics, Frame Theory has rare combination with CDA, but it can be found through analysis that some important views in Frame Theory have important implications and can be used as useful tools for CDA. From the perspective of Frame Theory, this thesis uses its basic views to analyze the news discourse from the level of vocabulary, sentence and text respectively, exploring how Frame Theory provide new perspective and idea for CDA and achieve more comprehensive analysis in cognitive level. In May, 2014, the normal Chinese oil rig in the South China Sea was subjected to Vietnam‘s irrational and violent interference. Vietnam not only sent vessel to repeatedly harass Chinese oil rig on the sea, but also sparked anti-Chinese riots in the country, which caused serious casualties and property damage to China. The major domestic and international media compete reporting about this event. Against this background, this thesis adopts Frame Theory to make critical discourse analysis about the twenty-eight news articles concerned this event in the famous Sino-US media China Daily and CNN.Results of this study are as follows: Firstly, the news is not always objective, and there exists many differences in the report of the same event in CNN and China Daily. Secondly, the Frame Theory can be used as an effective tool for critical discourse analysis. The views in the Frame Theory can provide implications for CDA from the level of vocabulary, sentence, and text. Thirdly, by adopting the Frame Theory to conduct CDA, it can be found that CNN and China Daily express different ideologies. CNN regards China as a threat and attributes all troubles and tensions to China. And China Daily holds that it is the Vietnam who should to be blamed. Besides, China Daily repeatly emphasizes China’s sovereignty over the South China Sea and resolutely opposes any violation or outside interference of sovereignty. Fourthly, the different frames and different ideologies in the news are closed related with their social context. The theoretical significance of the thesis lies in that it covers the shortage of CDA. And the practical significance lies in that through the critical analysis of news, it can help readers to obtain a better understanding about news, besides, it can help to increase readers’ the awareness as well as the ability of critical reading, thus obtaining a more comprehensive view on news in the future.
