A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Reported Discourse Translation About The Effection Of Hainan Island Incident On Beijing’s Bid For Olympics From Reference News And The New York Times

Critical discourse analysis(CDA)originates from linguistics,which emphasizes the critical analysis of the discourse especially the public discourse.The theoretical basis of this analysis method mainly comes from Fairclough’s three-dimensional discourse theory and Hallidy’s Systemic Functional Grammar.As for the term “Critical Linguistics”,it was first proposed by the British linguist Roger Fowler in 1979.Critical linguistics adheres to linguistics and systemic-functional grammar as the main body and the tool respectively.Its purpose is to reveal the influence of the ideology on the discourse through the analysis of non-literary texts.This thesis applies the method of critical discourse analysis(CDA)as an analytic tool to produce a comparative research of the reported discourse both in the source news text and the target news text based on the selected news text from The New York Times which has reported on the influence of the 2001 Sino-American collision event to Beijing’s bid for the 2008 Olympic Games and the translation of Reference News.It investigates how the reporter and translator use the reported discourse in the source and target news respectively to represent their ideological stances and at the same time,and how translators use translation strategies to show their standpoints and views.Thus,this thesis tries to broaden this approach from the monolingual discourse analysis to the bilingual discourse analysis,offering a number of perceptions on how to analyze the ideological influences on translation,in particular on news translation.The New York Times uses a very special form and technique for the news reports to report this news event,that is the reported discourse,guiding readers to draw close to the political and ideological position of their own.Reference News has made some appropriate changes in the translation including the reservation,modification and deletion which reveals the political and ideological position hidden in the reported discourse used in The New York Times’ news reports.In addition,Reference News dose some adaptation for the news translation considering ideology of its own accordingly.This thesis holds that the differences between the two newspapers in dealing with the same news event highlight the profound influence of the national position,especially the political and ideological position on both the original reporter and the translator.This reveals the relative subjectivity of the non-literary text,especially the news text itself and its translation,and proves that the influence and manipulation of ideology do exist in news translation.
