Buddhism has had a profound influence on Chinese traditional culture, especiallythe effect on language, Since it was introduced into China from the Han dynasty. Asthe media, the Chinese translation of Buddhist scriptures had a profound impact onthe languages of China. Buddhist scriptures is important corpus to study the evolutionof the Middle Ages and Modern Chinese to look at it from the point of view of thehistory of Chinese, which also includes a large amount of colloquial words andreflects the real situation of language usage in that period.As one of the early classics of Mahayana, The Chinese translation of Lotus Sutrahas a fluent, graceful language, and has enduring value on Buddhist intellectualhistory and literary history, which also is the one of the most widely spread classicssince ancient times. So we take it as the research object, combine the traditionalexegetical method with modern vocabulary theory, made a preliminary study of thecomposition of the lexical system, vocabulary coinage characteristics, new meaningsand new words, the evolution way of new meanings and new words.This article is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is introduction which including the introduction of Kumarajivaand Lotus Sutra, the significance of the study, review of the study production, studymethods and related terms.In the second chapter, we analysis the composition of the lexical system. Thevocabulary of Lotus Sutra can be divided into two parts of Buddhist words andgeneral words. Buddhist words including Buddhist terms and inherent nouns.In the third chapter, we analysis the vocabulary coinage characteristics of LotusSutra. Mainly from the point of view of vocabulary coinage characteristics, combinedwith semantic, investigate the vocabulary coinage characteristics of Lotus Sutra fromTransliterated words, Paraphrasing words, Matching words.In the fourth chapter, we elucidate the new meanings and new words in LotusSutra. Mainly discuss from new words and new meanings of old words.In the fifth chapter, we makes some discussion of the evolution way of newmeanings and new words in Lotus Sutra. Mainly including the extended meaning of words, the meaning of contamination,grammaticalization and perfusion wasrighteousness.The last is the epilogue which is a summary of research results of full text.
