The interpersonal relationshipdetermined by the author, translator and target reader serves as the main purpose oftranslation. Translation is not only a transfer at the linguistic level, but also areconstruction of interpersonal relationship and interactive function of the text. Thisthesis switches the translation principle from faithfulness to the realization ofauthorial intention and cross-cultural interpersonal relationship.Language is a system of ideational meaning, interpersonal meaning and textualmeaning. Interpersonal meaning is the meaning of language that instead of conveyinginformation it reveals participants’ status, attitudes, motivations and roles in theinteration. At the bottom it can be realized by lexical-grammatical system, at the top itcan reflect tenor of register. To better describe and explain translation, the author establishes an analyticalmodel based on previous studies and uses it to compare two translations of The RealStory of Ah Q from perspectives of status, familiarity, affect and commitment. In conclusion, the thesis holds that the interpersonal intent of the source text caninfluence on the translator’s understanding and construction of attitudes, appraisals, values and emotions etc. in the target text and can influence their translationstrategies.
