Huang Kan was writing the ReadingNotes to participate in the debate of the Tongcheng, The Selected Literary and textualcriticist schools in late Qing and early Republican China. He gived up revolution andturned to studying and teaching, the Reading Notes was his lecture notes at that time.Huang Kan’s teachers were Zhang Taiyan and Liu Shipei, who were very famous andare good at textual criticism and The Selected Literary, so he paid attention to theactual literature and literary grace at the same time, which all embodied in theReading Notes. The second chapter analysis Huang Kan’s using Semantics method to study theCarving a Dragon. He adopts the comparision collation, the self-collation, theothers-collation and principle collation to collate the book, which is of great value. The annotation of the Reading Notes is rich, including the achievements summed upby predecessors and Huang Kan’ s annotation, consisting of the annotation to thedifficult words, his theory research and the books quoted by him. Huang Kandistinguishes the YinXiu article wrong, and narrates a new one to supplement it.The third chapter discusses the theoretical system of the Reading Notes. First of all,Huang Kan inherits and develops Liu Xie’s natural theory and advocates in the Notes,so natural theory is the foundation of this system. Secondly, Huang Kan plays LiuXie’s middle theory inherited from the Confucian, and then raises his own standard to the article that a composition must have content and grace, and must follow themiddle theoty. Thirdly, Huang Kan stresses the skill when compositing. He raises thatthe skill is very important in every article genre, and he relates this theory in everypiece in his book. Therefore, the natural theory, the middle theory and the skill theoryconstitute the theoretical system of the Reading Notes. The fourth chapter explains the influence and value of the Notes. Huang Kan takeadvantage of the Carving a Dragon to explain his own theory of literature, and he alsouse this book to criticize the Tongcheng theory. He put the Carving a Dragon intohistory to elucidate the practical significance of it. Huang Kan creates a new style tostudy the Carving a Dragon, that is, annotation, quotation and theory’s elaboration, which become an standard to later generations’ study. In addition, several argumentshad become the beginning of the research on Carving a Dragon, such as “YuanDao”and “FengGu”. The three aspects above illustrate Huang Kan’s value of studying thebook, on the other hand, a number of books represented by the Reading Notespromoted the transformation of Chinese literary theory, so Huang Kan’s study alsovalued in literary theory.
