In1755, Voltaire came to settle in Geneva, and tried to take Paris theater toGeneva. D’Alembert wrote "Geneva" entry to support Voltaire’s wishes, but thissuffered from the opposition from the priest of Geneva and Rousseau. Rousseauwrote Letter to M. D’Alembert sharply criticize the initiative of the Theatre inGeneva, this article contains a wealth of Theater Economic Ethical Thought.Rousseau thought that theatre is a kind of business activity which means toentertain the vast majority for profit. On the one hand, Theatre attaches greatimportance to the profit and hurt the moral. Vulgar contents are acted in theaters,luxury sets and bad behaviors of actors will make the theatre of the era ruin thevirtue and public policy. On the other hand, the theater also attaches greatimportance to the business and hurt the arts. Theatre not only made vulgarization ofdrama content, but also interfered drama rules roughly, which makes the drama missthe due artistic character.Thus, Rousseau envisaged the construction of the theater in Geneva willproduce what kind of consequences. Geneva, a small city, comparing with big cityParis, it has its particularity. Theatre in Paris could exist for a very long time but it isdifficult for it to survive relying on entrance tickets. Insisting on constructing theaterin Geneva will lead to a series of economic justice issues. It could also threaten thestate power. For Rousseau, the performances in theatre should have a public welfarephilosophy and ethical requirements.The reason for the formation of such a Theater Economic Ethics Thought isrelated to the background of the time, Rousseau’s attention to moral influence of artand continued thinking about the problem of human freedom and equality. At thesame time, we should note that the Rousseau’s Theatre Economic Ethics Thought hascharacters of extreme and sincere. These are the aspects that should be noticed wheninterpret Rousseau’s thoughts.Rousseau’s Theater Economic Ethics Thought gave us a lot of inspiration. Weshould emphasize corporations’ social responsibility, paying attention to theresponsibilities of government in economic activities, and promote the concept ofrational consumption of Thrift. Meanwhile, we should pay attention to the moralinfluence of the art of economic activities, emphasizing on the artistic characters of the art economic activity and focusing on the public welfare of art economic activity.
