This paper takes parts of Vietnamese and Thai oversea students along with Chinese students as the survey respondents. And it takes potential complement as the research content, which is used very widely and includes many different kinds. Based on previous research, by means of contrastive analysis, corpus analysis, questionnaire survey and data statistics, it stresses on the pragmatic analysis of different survey respondents in acquiring potential complement from the aspects of context, meaning, variety and sentence pattern.By making conclusion about the survey and analysis of questionnaire, the author summarizes some pragmatic problems of different survey respondents in acquiring potential complement and through contrastive analysis finds out the similarities of the problems. Supported by some theories such as the theory of second language acquisition and theories on pragmatics, the paper tries to identify the causes of the above pragmatic problems. And combined with the general teaching methods of potential complement, the author makes an attempt to come up with some suggestions for potential complement teaching. The paper includes five parts, just as follows:The first part is about the summarize of previous research about the Chinese potential complement, the research object, the thinking along with the research objective and significance of the paper, different expressions and their comparison on potential complement in Chinese and Thai language as well as Vietnamese.The second part tells about the design and survey of questionnaire, data statistics and contrastive analysis in order to find out different survey respondents’situation in acquiring potential complement.The third part tries to explore the differences between survey respondents’ potential complement learning and the causes of the problems they made in acquiring potential complement by comparison.The forth part comes up with some suggestions on potential complement teaching in order to deal with the pragmatic problems had by the survey respondents, based on the general teaching methods of potential complement.The end is the conclusion of this paper.
