Anthony Trollope describes the characters vividly by applyingproper diction, and he also uses idioms and similes to enrich the content of the novel.Within the framework of Functional Equivalence Theory put forward by Eugene Nida,this translation report aims at applying the principle of Functional Equivalence toguide the Chinese translation of the excerpts of The American Senator and then usesthe closest natural equivalent to the source-language message so as to make theresponse of the readers to the translated text closest to that of the original readers tothe text.This report analyses the practical values of Functional Equivalence to fictionaltranslation in terms of the expression of the meaning of vocabulary, skills of idiomtranslation, reproduction of the images in simile, and description of the fictionalcharacter. Under the guidance of this theory, the author aims to achieve the minimal,realistic functional equivalence, and strive to keep close to the maximal, idealfunctional equivalence constantly, which will provide guidance for relevanttranslation in the future. |
