This is a report on my translation experience of the first eight chapters of Arctic Chill, the English version of a fiction by Icelandic writer Arnaldur Indrieason. My translation practice was carried out by referring to Nida's Functional Equivalence theory, which accentuates functional equivalence between the original text and the target one in order that readers of different cultural context can to the greatest extent understand or appreciate the fictional story as its original readers can do.Nida's theory of Functional Equivalence is highly applicable in fictional translation as far as methodology is concerned since it values readers' response more than their literal interpretation of the original version. In doing so,much attention is focused on different roles or functions of the contents, for example, settings, characterization and dialogues. The process adds to my experience and improves my translation competence. The report begins with a brief introduction of the project with regard to the author, the plot and the artistic features of the source text. Then a description of project procedure is presented concerning translation process, preparation, execution, and quality control. The following chapter is devoted to case studying,in which the author of the thesis illustrated how Nida's theory is applied in guiding my translation of different contents such as the setting, the characterization and the dialogues during my translation. In the conclusion chapter, the author of the thesis summarized the insights and gains the author had obtained from this project. Both the original English version of the eight chapters and my Chinese translation are attached to this report.
