This retrospective research report is based on the translation of five Chinesespeeches on higher education. The translation materials are selected from the speechesat Joint Conference of University Presidents at Home and Abroad. The presidents ofeight universities at home and abroad brought a feast of educational thought andcultural exchange in the forms of report and informal discussion. The thesis firstly introduces the background and significance of the research. Thesecond chapter summarizes the main content and features of the source text. The thirdchapter is a review of translation process including the main steps, and the problemsthe author met and the solutions of them. The fourth chapter is the key chapter, whichgives a detailed analysis of the translation theories followed and the translationtechniques adopted by giving examples. To be specific, this chapter is discussed atthree levels: at lexical level, literal translation, free translation, amplification andomission are adopted; at syntactic level, division, combination and restructuring areused; at discourse level, coherence and cohesion are paid more attention. I mainlyfollow Nida’s functional theory and Yan Fu’s "faithfulness, expressiveness andelegance". The fifth chapter concludes the whole thesis including the translationpractice and the retrospective report. By summarizing the whole translating processand researching in a reflective way, I accumulate more experience of the speechtranslation of higher education and hope other translators of this sort of text can drawreferences from the thesis and ponder on the limitations.
