Nowadays, many professional institutions in China have their own students orchestras. According to these colleges’characteristics, these student orchestras can be mainly divided into three categories. Firstly, the orchestras in the conservatory of music, the students have strong abilities in playing and its overall playing standard is close to the professional orchestra. Secondly, the orchestras in the comprehensive university, the students are art-talented students admitted through the college entrance examination. Although the individual playing level needs to be improved, its overall ability is stable and unified. The third category is the student orchestras in the local art institutions or the vocational colleges, the length of students studying how to play the musical instruments are quite differently, and, of course, their are not at the same playing levels, therefore, its overall playing ability is unstable and limited. From what has been discussed above, to training for the third-category student orchestra has its own characteristics. This paper aims to analyze the characteristics of the third-category student orchestra, to explain the importance of basic training for improving its musical ability and basic instrument playing ability by exploring its basic training aspects, and to explain its characteristics of basic playing and to provide some more targeted training and improving methods for its weak points by analyzing the rehearsal process of a real work.
