| As a member of the language vocabulary system, color words are very special,it is not only theinherent color of the objects, but a cultural representation of the people who speak the language. By thecolor words, we can learn a nation’s religious beliefs, customs, aesthetic temperament, etc. With colorwords, the language is more beautiful, more apt to express, so the color word system occupies veryimportant position in both Chinese and English. Therefore it is given widespread attention of linguisticfield at home and abroad.This article gets the reasons for different expression of basic color words’ cultural representation inboth Chinese and English. It’s mainly by the following methods: to begin with the cultural connotation ofthe basic color word red, white, black, green, yellow, blue; the relevant theories of cultural linguistics; tocompare their respective cultural connotations; by the analysis of a large number of examples. The article isdivided into four chapters:The first one is the introduction, including the reason of the paper’s writing, the research status ofcolor words both at home and abroad, the research purpose, content, significance of this paper, and researchmethods adopted by this thesis.The second one introduces color, the natural phenomenon, and its characteristics, basic colorwords and the relationship between basic color words and the culture.The third one mainly compares and analyzes the performance of the cultural connotation from the six basic color words: red, white, black, green, yellow, and blue in both Chinese and English. And thenconcludes that the same color words may have different cultural connotations in different languages, butdifferent color words may have the same or similar cultural connotation.The fourth one is the body of this article. It deeply analyzes the reasons for different performance ofChinese-English color words cultural connotation from three aspects: the geographical environment,religious belief and thinking mode. |
