The "Absence Effect" And The Interpreters’ On-site Responses In Interpretation

Although the dialogue interpretation has been existed since World War II, it didnot arouse enough attention in academic circle. However, with the rapidly growth ofthe economic globalization, the Chinese has found themselves need to make contactwith foreigners more frequently. The scale has spread from television, books andinternational conferences to face-to-face communication. Thus, the status ofinterpreters has been improved gradually.Thereupon, interpretive theory was founded by the famous French theoreticianDanica Seleskovitch in1960s on the basis of the combination of long-terminterpretation practice. The theory stresses on the produce of meaning in the processof “understanding” and “expression”, which is the phrase of “deverbalization”.On the basis of understanding of the essence of interpretation, the effect theory inintercultural communication has pointed out that the information conveyed in theprocess of communication is the speaker’s intention. If his or her intention wasrealized, the intercourse was succeeded then. In order to achieve a successfulcommunication, every factor that may affect the communication is needed to be takeninto consideration. The so-called “absence effect theory”, in other words,“absentfactors” includes the interpreter’s occupation, status and the general socialenvironment, which are hidden and easily overlooked. On the contrary, the “presenceeffect theory”, in other words,“present factors” refers to internal verbal knowledgeand non-verbal knowledge, which are dominant, corresponding to the former one.Nevertheless, in the process of interpretation, almost every interpreter will face aproblem of “can not translate”. On the other hand, the peculiarity of instant requiresthe interpreter to convey everything without any stop or suspension. Then thedecoding and re-encoding of information included in the “absent effect” will dependon the interpreter’s improvisation. It can be concluded as deverbalization, which iscoincided with the interpretative theory.Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to help the interpreter better master the“presence effect” and “absence effect” combining with the interpretative theory.Through a series of practice of bilingual thinking conversion, the interpreter could enhance the sensitivity of cultural diversity and individual identity and accumulateexperience. Finally, they will become qualified and professional interpreters.The whole paper could be divided into five parts, including four chapters and aconclusion. In the first chapter, the author will use some related theories forsupporting the whole essay; the second chapter introduces the central theory: absenceeffect theory, by the way of the introduction of the interpretative theory; then in thethird chapter, the status and quality requirements of the interpreters’ are introduced forbetter explain the content in next chapter; the fourth chapter continuous gives outsome problems or errors often happen in the process of interpretation, as well as somesolutions; and finally in the last part, conclusion, the author shows out somelimitations in this research and also some wishes for future studies in the field.
