A Report On Translation Of An Absence Of Competition(Excerpt)

Compared with North America and European countries,China’s sports industry is relatively backward,while the output value of American sports industry has reached hundreds of billions of dollars.China Basketball Association(CBA)has always been learning from the development of National Basketball Association(NBA).Although CBA is developing very fast indeed,there’s still a long way to go.In the book An Absence of Competition,the author Neil Longley analyzes the nature of “competition” and “competitive advantage” within the US professional sport industry through a multidisciplinary approach.The primary contribution of the book lies in its comprehensive and systematic analysis of the evolving competitive landscape in the professional sport industry.By reading An Absence of Competition,managers and related personnel can learn the operating experience from the American Sports Leagues and improve the management level of China’s leagues.The author selects the last two chapters of An Absence of Competition for translation practice,and completes the translation project under the guidance of Verschueren’s adaptation theory.Based on adaptation theory,the whole process of translation can be reflected clearly and coherently with selection and adaptation as the main line.In the translation process,in order to comply with the author’s expressive intention and the target readers’ cognitive level,the author flexibly chooses translation strategies such as addition,omission,free translation,etc.In the case analysis,the four angles,including contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability,dynamics of adaptability and salience of adaptation of process,are used to analyze the basis for choosing different strategies in the translation process.All in all,adaptation theory plays an important role in guiding the understanding and translation of texts in the field of sports economy.The author hopes that the experience obtained from this practice can provide references for the further study of the translation in sports field.
