Mikhail Bulgakov is a Novelist-Playwright of Russian classical literature in20thcentury. Using the topics of "literature and power" as well as "freedom", MikhailBulgakov created Flight, The Days of the Turbins and many other dramas in theextreme historical period. As an ill-fated playwright, Bulgakov showed the conflictsbetween individual and others, also there’s deep thinking about society and identity. inhis dramas, The essay based on the theory of "Gaze" and "Identity consciousness" ofBulgakov, using close reading and character analyze to describe the stress from visualand the exploring of "oneself" in Bulgakov’s drama works.This essay includes prologue, main body paragraphs and summary. Prologueintroduced Bulgakov’s literature achievement, research review at home and abord,topics of this paper.There are three parts of the main body paragraphs in this essay.First part discussed definition and explanation of "Gaze" and the theory of "Identityconsciousness". And the theory of "Gaze" comes from the attention of visual and itwas firstly considered by biology aspect, and then it related to post-modernism theory.Therefore, this essay start to analyze the "Gaze" theory from many aspects, whichincluding existentialism, psychology, post-modernism, visual culture and feministpoetics, explain Sartre’s idea of "Gaze by others" and Foucault’s opinion about"Gaze" in disciplinary power."Literature and political power" is one of the mostimportant topics in Bulgakov’s life and creation. Furthermore, basic on the newhistoricism, this essay discusses Bulgakov’s identity consciousness. The analysis ofinfluence from "Gaze" to build Bulgakov’s figures and self-criticism through fightwith future and other’s "Gaze". Second part is about how "Gaze" deduce inBulgakov’s drama. According to Sartre’s idea of "Gaze by others" and Foucault’sopinion about "Gaze" in disciplinary power, this essay use text reading to analysis offigures in Flight and The Days of the Turbins. Moreover, this essay discussed thededuction of "Gaze" in Bulgakov’s drama through "oneself and others" and"individual and society". Furthermore, the last part described the anti-Gaze. Bulgakov emphasize self-criticism in his dramas and showed review Bulgakov’s creation styleand his inheritance of Russia literature and analysis his seeking of identity andself-construal. In summary, this essay emphasizes,"Gaze" in Bulgakov’s dramacreation and his seeking of ego.
