This is a translation project report for an excerpt from a research report published in2012:Research Universities and the Future of America:Ten Breakthrough Actions Vital to Our Nation’s Prosperity and Security. It mainly elaborates a series of measures the US government should take to ensure America’s leadership in global economic competition in21st century as well as competitiveness and advantages of the US colleges and the threats they are faced. Knowing the status quo of American institutions would be beneficial for Chinese universities in university development, enhancing research capability and in realizing their goal in21st century.According to Peter Newmark’s theory on text types, texts are mainly divided into six functions, each of which corresponds to a particular text type, among which three types are most prevail:expressive text, informative text and vocative text. A text has one main function, though it may contain more than one function. This text analysis the status quo of the U.S. research universities in a specific and deep-going manner, and meanwhile put forward ten suggestions, aimed to keep American education in the leading position. This text is both informative and vocative. As for the translation strategy, communicative translation is suitable, by realizing the style of the original text to target language reader.This report consists of four chapters. Chapter one is a general introduction consisting of the background of the project, objectives of the project, significance of the project, and layout of the report. Chapter two is the introduction to source text, consisting of introduction to the original text, the general information of source text, the contents of source text and the features of the language used. Chapter three is about translation difficulties and methodologies. The last chapter is a conclusion, including the experiences and lessons from the project and the prospects for further studies.
