Translation Report On Operating And Maintenance Instructions Of Belt Conveyor

The success of a project relies much on the correct translation of corresponding equipment data.Mechanical text materials are different from literary texts as mechanical texts involve a large number of professional terms and safety signs.At present,the quality of mechanical text translation is far behind the working request because improper translation theories and language features are still applied by some translators.The translation material in this report is Operation and Maintenance Instruction of Belt Conveyor,which is of great importance for the related staff to use the equipment smoothly.Therefore,an appropriate guiding theory should be selected in the translation process to achieve the reading purpose.The material is translated under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory.According to Newmark’s classification of texts,this material belongs to informative text and vocative text.Different translation skills are employed by the author during translation,such as literal translation,amplification,word formation and so on.The target text is analyzed from three aspects:1)At the lexical level,the professional terms and common nouns are translated accurately.Many parallel texts are checked and several translation skills,such as literal translation and amplification are applied by the author so as to achieve the communicative purpose of the text;2)At the syntactical level,the passive sentences can be translated into active sentences or non-subject sentences where the subjects are undefined in the source text.3)At the textual level,the branch structures in source text will be analyzed and then be divided into several parts.Then,they will be translated into several Chinese short sentences according to the logic.Through this practical translation,the author not only accumulates some mechanical knowledge and terms,but also further learns Newmark’s communicative translation theory and applies it into practice,which lays a certain foundation for the translation of such text in the future.
