Pompeii city was a small harbor city at Campania in Italian Peninsula. Some people hadsettled here very early due to the good conditions of its geography and climate. Plus theinfluence of the advanced Greek culture, it had already been developed into a prosperous cityby the first century BC. But the establishment of a Roman colony changed the prospect andfate of this city. In80BC Sula established a veteran colony there, hence the Pompeii citywhich had once been influenced by the Roman culture to some limited extent began to beRomanized on a large scale. This paper analyzes the Romanization of Pompeii city mainlyfrom five sections.The first part introduces the context of the Romanization of Pompeii city. By analyzingvarious advantages and conditions of Pompeii city, we can learn the possibility for theRomanization of Pompeii city.The second part briefly narrates the context of the colony establishment in Pompeii cityby Romans, and briefly analyzes the great promotion of the colony to the Romanization. Theestablishment of Roman colony, the support of the Roman ruler, and the joint effort of theRoman veterans and Pompeian citizens, all these factors gave the necessity of Romanizationto Pompeii city.The third part is about the Romanization of city administrative system. And it consists oftwo aspects: the political supervision by the central government, the municipal administrativeinstitutions and its functions. Pompeii city had always kept a tight contact with the centralgovernment since it became the Roman colony. Both the officials and fundamental institutionsthat engaged in municipal administration adopted the typical Roman titles, and borecorresponding functions and properties.The fourth part is about the Romanization of public and private buildings. Publicbuildings and private houses are analyzed respectively here. The main public buildings aredescribed in detail in turns, and the active employments of various Romanization factors bythem are highlighted, including building materials and techniques and so on. The structuraland decorative features of private houses are described, and their fast developments inRomanization after the colony was established are also highlighted.The fifth part is about the Romanization of citizens’ lives. This part is analyzed indifferent aspects respectively, including public lives, economic lives, religious lives,entertainment lives, and household lives. They all emphasize the vitality and vigor which thePompeian citizens have in various urban livelihood fields. And that embodies that theRomanization has an important effect on the prosperity and richness of citizens’ lives. Finally, due to the systematic narrations above, we can conclude that Pompeii city has itsown Romanization features. In short, Pompeian culture is the merging of the local and theRoman cultural factors. Previous Greek cultural basis and later Roman cultural tide improvedthe final appearance of Pompeii city together.
