Xie Wendong is a complex historical figure in China modern history, whose identities have been changed from time to time in different historical periods of the Northeast modern society. As the main leader of the Tulong Mountain peasant rebellion, Xie led the peasants to fight against Japanese invaders’policy of "hand over land and gun" in1934. Later, he joined the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army. In1937, Xie held the appointment of the commander of the eighth army and led the anti-Japanese armed forces to continue to socialize with the Japanese puppet. In1939, the eighth team of the Anti-Japanese United Army was defeated by the enemy. Due to many reasons, Xie turned to the Japanese and became a propaganda tool of the Japanese’s beating on the Anti-Japanese United Army. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Xie led his army to follow the KMT and named as the "central bandit" at that time. Xie’s changeful life has close connection with his time, region, the current international and domestic politics and economy and many other elements. This paper mainly studies the related questions of Xie Wendong in the periods of leading the Tulong Mountain peasant rebellion, joining the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army and the National Liberation War. It also conducts a deep analysis on several controversial issues as "whether Xie’s army is landlords’ armed force","whether Xie Wenglong surrenders to the Japanese voluntarily" and so no. This paper strives for making a comprehensive and objective evaluation on such a controversial figure.
