The Beijing School is a unique literary genre in the1930s, represented by ZhouZuoren, Fei Ming, Shen Congwen, Li Jianwu and Zhu Guangqian. The reason why it iscalled the Beijing School is that its authors taken activities in Beijing and Tianjin, andmost of their works have been published in Beijing and Tianjin publications. Besides, itsartistic style is more consistent in nature.“Literary Magazine”,”Literary Quarterly”,”DaGong Bao Literary” are its main magazines. The basic characteristics of the BeijingSchool is concerned about the life, emphasizing the unique character of the artistic butkeeping their distance from the political struggle. Ideologically it emphasize on “pureliterary taste”-the body of literature and regards the concept of “harmony”,“moderation”and “inappropriate” as the basic principles of aesthetic awareness. Shen Congwen is thefirst writer of the Beijing School writers.The Beijing School writers regard the “village of China” as the main contents and theirrich in cultural implications. Most of the Beijing School writers are realism school. Theychange in the development of realism, develop lyrical novels and satirical novels. Theymake fiction poetic and prosify. The realism is with romanticism breath as well. Theartistic characteristics of their works are as follows: First, the Native-Dream, the fantasticnative tracing is a major feature of the Beijing school novels. The Beijing School writersconstruct their native dream on the concept of the so-called “ideal world” and the “realworld” of Zhu Guangqian dualism which thinks that the art is the dream and the emotionis true. They agree with the attitude of rural customs and folks of patriarthy, digging therustic beauty of the human, moral beauty, characteristic beauty of the customs and theserene natural beauty. Shen Congwen’s Xiangxi World, Fei Ming’s Edong Mountain, LuFen’s Henan Orchard City, Xiao Qian’s Jinghua slums are all manifestations of thisfeature. Secondly, the compassion life, Beijing school novels are mostly out of humancompassion. Beijing School writers not only sincerely praise the purity of the primitivecivilization but also see the Confucianism of patriarchal barbaric and unfortunate life inthe history and culture of contemplation.
