Edward Morgan Foster (1879-1970) was one of the famous English writers of the20thcentury. As the respective of English novel from traditional to modern transition period, hewas called a master of modern English novel writing. The writer has only six novels bepublished, but each of the works has a profound ideological connotation. Academic circlesmade many aspects of interpretations about Forster’s works, such as symbolism, poststructuralism, post colonialism, feminism etc. These papers expounded the meanings of theworks and produced great influence in academic circles. But the ecological thoughts that thenovels reflected was left in the basket. The writer was keenly awarded of the serious impactfrom the industry civilization: force of science and technology destroyed the beautiful naturalenvironment, money-oriented society atmosphere stimulated people’s infinite desire,indifference and estrangement existed between people. Forster has always had a specialfeeling for nature; he thinks that nature is human’s material home and spiritual home. Humandisregard the intimate relationship of man and nature, our extreme expansion caused socialcrisis, therefore, Forster has revealed the alienation between man and nature brought byindustrialization process. By thinking about people’s spiritual crisis and social crisis,he madea epilog that the people and the nature are a whole symbolic, human cannot surviveindependently from nature. He hoped that the people can correct attitude to nature, back tonature, back to the human survival and the development basis.The paper consists of three parts: introduction, text and conclusion. The text containsthree chapters: in first chapter it at first analyses the background of ecological consciousnessin Forster’s thought in detail. The analysis sorts out Forster’s ecological thought arising fromthe choroids, from the highly developed industrial society, family and personal growthexperience, university education and the author’s widely colorful travel history. Secondly, thepaper creates ecological and natural writing as two clues according to the main writing ofForster. The second chapter combines three specific works to analyze Forster’s ecologicalconsciousness. A Room with a View analyzes the spiritual ecology in Forster’s novels from agirl’s growing in the spirit, with this as the starting point to found mutual influence ofpersonal spiritual ecology and social ecosystem in a perspective way. Howard Ends analyzesindustrial civilization on the social ecological impact through two different kind of socialmembers in marriage connection. It includes the conclusion that social ecology not onlycontain the political economic attributes but also nature attributes, destroy nature is destroyingthe society. A Passage to India even analyzes in the greater position of the whole of humanecological condition: the anthropocentrism thoughts are deconstructed, nature is not just thehuman’s nature but all the living-beings’ nature. Forster began to expand his scope ofecological thinking from the first work, the content from individual to society and then to thewhole ecological system. The writer tried to remind us that we should use the contact point ofview from overall to observe and ponder over a problem. The third chapter analyzes Forster’stransformation in the works of traditional natural view and view of life, to show its ecological nature outlook and outlook on life, in both the basis to show Forster’s ecological ideal picture.
