On Translation Of Climate Report From The Perspective Of Newmark’s Translation Theory

This translation report, written on the basis of the translation process of Climateand Social Stress: Implications for Security Analysis, aims at probing the translationprinciples and skills of climate report from the aspect of lexises, sentences and passivevoice under the instruction of Peter Newmark’s translation theory.The source text, Climate and Social Stress: Implications for Security Analysis,was prepared by all the members of the Committee on Assessing the Impacts ofClimate Change on Social and Political Stresses at the request of the U.S intelligencecommunity. The committee was approved by the Governing Board of the NationalResearch Council, whose members were drawn from the councils of the NationalAcademy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute ofMedicine. Composed at the end of the year2012, the source text makes a briefintroduction of the effect of climate change on the national security, and informsmethods for assessing national security threat by analyzing the social and politicalstress posed by climate change.This report is divided into four chapters. The first chapter briefly introducesreasons for choosing the source text, the content of the text and the structure of thisreport; the second chapter deals with the characteristics of the source text; the thirdchapter, which is the core of this report, lists series of problems from the perspectiveof lexises, sentences and passive voice by using specific examples, and analyses thetranslation methods adopted under the instruction of Peter Newmark’s translationtheory; in addition, this chapter presents the software used on the process oftranslation; the fourth chapter makes a conclusion for the report.In all, a qualified translator should be equipped with the following abilities: theability to understand the source language, the ability to express the source passagewith the target language, as well as the ability to choose the appropriate translationmethods and strategies according to different text-categories.
