In this article, the studied early20th century Chinese original string worksmainly focused on violin and also includes cello, viola and other works where stringaccompaniment played an important role. The String Art was born in the early of16th century, a time period when world structure and history has undergone asignificant change. Its development process stretches over centuries and multiplestages, ranging from the early embryonic stage, gradual improvement stage in itstheoretical system, and to todays overall prosperity stage. China has a long history ofMusic culture and is one of the earliest countries that develop music culture in theworld. Although string art originated in the West, its development in the East,especially in China, cannot be underestimated. The Ming Dynasty was forced to liftmore than100years’ Boycott and enable trade and shipment with outside countries,which provided the conditions for introducing violin art to China. Accompanying withincreasingly frequent exchange of the East-West cultural exchanges, violin art thrived,disseminated and developed in the following centuries. Since the20th century,Chinese society has undergone the baptism of the May4th Movement, a new waveof culture promoting new music began to grow vigorously, shaking the status of thetraditional music. String art, as a social and cultural activity, in its differentdevelopment stages reflected different cultural thoughts and value orientations. Thisarticle studied different types of composers in the early20th century includingoverseas Chinese composers, domestic art institute composers and leftistrevolutionary composers based on the perspective of history of aesthetics andpointed out that the aesthetic characteristics of those works came from the excellentwestern musical skills, the modern expression of traditional classics and theabsorption of great values of the over-sea string works. Due to the common efforts ofthese composers, many outstanding works were created and serviced the era. In theMay4th Movement promoted modernization process, what new aestheticcharacteristics were present in these original string works? These new aestheticcharacteristics were verified in the three stage development process, which were embryonic period (1915-1927), boom period (1927-1941) and era-engagementperiod (1942-1949). Unlike other previous string works’ aesthetic characteristics,these ones have never been explored and deeply studied. This article summarizedChinese original string works’ aesthetic characteristics, explored the basis of workcomposition, studied their gain and loss in art as well as significant impact uponfollowers’ string art creation, and emphasized their reference value for buildingsocialist new culture.
