Practical Chinese--including a topical dictionary of5000everyday terms is a textbook on basic oral Chinese by a American language officer Harry. S.Aldrich, who came to China at about1928. This thesis organizes and analyzes the contents of this book in aspects of phonetic, grammar and vocabulary, investigates the achievements and failures of the book in contents, structural principles and teaching methodology.The first chapter is an introduction to the intent of choosing the title and the meaning of doing this research and the author. Then PracticalChinese--including a topical dictionary of5000everyday terms is introduced on aspects of target readers, target readers, structure, content and version information.Chapter two described the initial, final and tones teaching as well as the accent and emphasis teaching.of this book.On the basis of it, the characteristics are analyzed and estimated.Chapter three is about the grammar teaching of the book. The grammar points are carefully described and categorized and the teaching content is compared with the research achievements of today. The vocabulary in text and the dictionary are analyzed on amounts and standard of selection, so as to display the features of teaching on this aspect.Chapter five is an overall estimation of the book, in which advantages and disadvantages are both listed and illustrated.
