Chinese compliment is a kind of polite words which owns a high frequency utilization indaily life. Based on the research of the compliment by predecessors, this paper investigates theacquisition of compliment by the foreign students. The linguistic data is486compliment corpuswhich searched from the composition of foreign students at middle and advanced level in HSKDynamic Composition Corpus of Beijing Language and Culture University. The paper dealtmainly with the following questions:(1)The topic, sentence types, the key words and the quality distribution that used byadvanced foreign students. Analyzing the causes of such changes, the types of errors and the lawof acquisition in accordance with data transfer rates.(2)The author puts forward teaching strategies accordingly the types and causes of errors inacquisition compliment, hoping to give an assistance to the teaching of Chinese as a foreignlanguage.Through the research, we draws three conclusions:(1)The Chinese compliments Interlanguage system of the advanced foreign students isconsist of five parts: the topics are skills and achievements, personality, appearance, possessionsand some about living condition, family situation, relationship; the sentence types are four basicsentence patterns, and “n./you+v.+n./pron.+adv of degree+adj.”,“pron.+adv ofdegree+v.+n./pron.”,“n./you+v.+adv of degree+adj.+n.”; vocabulary types are adjective, verband noun; the types of errors are wrong word error, missing word error, adding word error, wordorder error and meaning error; the causes of errors are negative transfer of mother tongue, thetarget language generalization, negative transfer of cultural background and the effect of learningenvironment.(2)The processes of acquisition by the the advanced foreign students are: the higherproficiency in Chinese language, the closer to the compliment of native Chinese on the choose oftopics; the utilization rate of sentence1,2and3decreases as the students’ level of Chineseincreases; the key words are conditioned by the Chinese level and vocabulary difficulty; thechange of sentence patterns is also related to the level of Chinese. (3)In this paper we propose three suggestions to the teaching of compliment: As the teacher,should pay attention to the teaching of compliment; in foreign language teaching, it is necessaryto emphasize both language and pragmatic; the creation of real classroom teaching situations.
