Stories of Twenty-four Arhats was written in the late Ming Dynasty. Thisdissertation researches on some philological and linguistic phenomena of Stories ofTwenty-four Arhats. It is the first time this book be studied from the perspective oflinguistics. The dissertation consists of five parts.Chapter One contains three parts. Part one introduces editions and the maincontent of the book. Part two is about the study value and current researches on thisbook. Part three lists study methods of this dissertation.Chapter Two classifies the variant characters of Stories of Twenty-four Arhatsbased on the Theory of Chinese Characters Configuration.Chapter Three catalogues the reduplication of Stories of Twenty-four Arhatsaccording to the part of speech, as well as analyzes their semantic characteristics andpragmatic values.Chapter Four makes a study on the Buddhist vocabulary of Stories ofTwenty-four Arhats. In this chapter, we apply Semantic Field Theory to betterillustrate the subtle semantic difference between words that belong to the samesemantic field.Chapter Five discusses the significance of studying words in the Stories ofTwenty-four Arhats to the revise of the large-scale Chinese dictionary from threerespects, which are, supply lemmas, advance documented evidences, and supplydocumented evidences.
