Business interpreting plays an increasingly important role in China with the rapidexpansion of its economic cooperation with other countries and regions against thebackdrop of economic globalization. However, the quality of business interpreting isnot satisfying due to a lack of professional business interpreters and very fewtheoretical studies on business interpreting among other reasons.Nowadays the study of interpreting still lags a long way behind that of translation, particularly in the business field. What is more, the study concerning preparations forinterpreting is far less. Preparations, an indispensable part in the practice ofinterpreting, will determine whether the interpreting practice is successful or not to agreat extent. Therefore, preparations should be carried out in accordance with theparticular interpreting task under the guidance of certain theoretical framework.Relevance theory (RT) sees interpreting success as the convergence of thespeaker’s intention and the hearer’s expectation, shedding some lights on improvinginterpreting through making targeted preparations. This thesis is trying to provide some effective guidance for pre-task preparationsfor business SI through combining theoretical study and interpreting practices.Chapter One is a brief introduction. Then literature review about businessinterpreting, RT and preparations for SI has been done in Chapter Two, on the basis ofwhich, the definition and categories of pre-task preparations for business SI from theperspective of RT are discussed in details in Chapter Three. Chapter Four describes acase study on the author’s practice through a comparison between the interpretingperformances before and after preparations. The last Chapter is the Conclusion part. The thesis found that business SI has its own characteristics, and pre-taskpreparations should be done systematically to better convey speaker’s intention andrealize the audience’s expectation to achieve successful business communication.
